Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
The still life was a subject Steinberg repeatedly turned to during his career. Compared to his playful treatment of other timeless themes, like portraiture, Steinberg approached this still life in a rather straightforward, traditional manner. This composition feels like a cousin to many of the floral still lifes that hang throughout the museum. It is, however, decidedly Steinbergian in a significant way: the pitcher and vase were his own. As such, this watercolor blurs the lines between still life and autobiography.
