Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
Steinberg kept an extensive collection of postcards gathered over the course of his many travels. In the 1950s, he spent time in Kansas City, meeting with executives of Hallmark Cards to discuss calendar and holiday card commissions. During these visits, he likely picked up a postcard similar to the one reproduced below. Decades later, he turned to his postcard as inspiration for this drawing, embellished with replicas of additional artist’s tools—a pencil and ink pen that he whittled from wood.
