Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
Recognizable objects such as a bottle of ink, a clock, and a ruler join scattered coins that appear to levitate above a tabletop. A note with Steinberg’s inscrutable invented writing is held in place by a paperweight. The lack of modeling renders the paperweight as flat as the stamps in the lower center and upper right. Much like a seal lends an official air to a document, here these stamps seem to certify this drawing as an authentic record of Steinberg’s studio table
