Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
Although Steinberg's more than decade-long business relationship with Hallmark Cards ended in the late 1960s, Kansas City, where Hallmark is headquartered, lingered in Steinberg's art. He likely based this view of Kansas City's General Post Offce on a postcard, like another version that hangs nearby.
Steinberg's playful use of rubber stamps makes multiple appearances in the drawing, from the sidewalk populated with Kansas Citians to offcial-looking mail symbols above the building. e stacked, wavy lines in the upper right are reminiscent of a postal cancellation mark-a Steinbergian wink, perhaps, to the source material on which he relied.
