Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
“When I do a landscape,” Steinberg asserted, “I use it in my own way. I don’t think of it as being a true landscape, a part of nature. It’s more like a collage of nature.” While simultaneously collecting actual postcards of places he visited, Steinberg made many of these Postcard-Style Landscapes in the 1970s and 1980s. Here, he collaged three sparsely detailed landscapes, created with different materials, onto a single sheet. In each, the foreground is occupied by a solitary figure—a stand-in for the artist taking in the world.
