Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
Although Steinberg took influence from what he saw while on his many travels, he also found inspiration from many types of art. Drawing on vistas from the postcards he collected, he created what are called Postcard-Style Landscapes. Exquisitely brushed or sponged with watercolor washes, they are relatively simple compositions. Rubber-stamp seals punctuate the sky while rubber-stamp figures populate the landscapes below. “If I use a rubber stamp...I do it to show that this paint is not real paint. It’s a symbol of the thing painted,” Steinberg claimed.
