Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
The fun Steinberg must have had while drawing radiates from a piece like this. Lines of various types—straight, curved, ruled, cross-hatched, thick, and thin—combine with multiple sorts of rubber stamps—arches, solid circles, and those impersonating ocial seals and insignia. Together with the purposefully uncrackable code of his caption-like inscriptions, what could this drawing mean? As much as we may wish to know, Steinberg might reply, “Every explanation is over-explanation.”
