Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
This drawing, with its chaotic horizon line that tangles with the unintelligible script at its center, sparks many questions: Where are the horse, rider, and dog traveling along this winding path? From where have they come? These musings would have delighte Steinberg. He regarded viewers of his art as collaborators in the act of meaning making. He confessed a hope to make peope "jittery" with "situations that are out of context and contain several interpretations."
