Steinberg traveled widely and frequently rode trains across the United States and abraod. These experiences seeped into his musings as well as his art, with trains frequently appearing in drawings. "Traveling by train," Steinberg noted, allows us to "...see most of all the back sides of cities. The view is 'lateral'..." In this drawing, the view Steinberg shares with us is lateral, too, as if we are rolling past the train and the landscape beyond on a parallel track.
