Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
Parades obsessed Steinberg for decades—an attraction, he explained, that gave him “an excuse to stare at people.” Here, the rhythmic left-right-left steps appear to be taken by representative dignitaries from dierent countries. e gure leading this parade is Steinberg’s version of Uncle Sam, who personies the United States. e self-described parade addict rst populated his drawings with ranks and les of marchers for a 25-foot-long scroll-like drawing published in LIFE magazine on August 27, 1951
