Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
This drawing served as the stage-set-like backdrop for the Main Street - Small Town panel of The Americans - a monumental 240-foot-long mural-collage Steinberg contributed to the United States Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair in Belgium. To create his mural-collage, he pasted paper cut outs of many types of people against enlarged photographs of his drawings. The epic panorama presented his vision of everyday life across the United States to a global audience of 40 million visitors in just six months.
