Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
From the unintelligible script to a speech bubble and a rubber stamp, many signature Steinbergian elements come together in this work. These also include bridges and buildings like the pagoda of the title that nod to Steinberg's background in architecture. The pagoda may also have been influence by designs found on the artist's personal collection of British Willow Pattern ceramic tableware. Incorporating his own spin on a Western interpretation of Chinese architecture into a world of his own making is pure Steinberg.
