InscribedWritten in graphite on the wrapping edge of the tape seal is: From top to bottom, "Scovills Heavy Plate/ c. 1843-1844// Retaped 6/25/02/ DAW Exeter NH"; and from proper left to right, "From the estate of a great granddaughter of Hamilton L. Smith, very early daguerreotypist // in Cleveland, Ohio & inventor / of the tintype along with Peter Neff Jr. c. 1855". Inverted in the upper right corner of the plate is the stamped hallmark "Scoville".

DescriptionImage of men, boys, and a dog standing across an alley with a tall tree in the background. This quarter plate daguerreotype is housed in a gold foil covered paper mat inside of a traditional wood framed miniature case with a brown leather covering embossed with a lyre and scroll motif. The lid has a red silk covered cushion lining, and the tray has red velvet covered retainers and a white paper lining.
