DescriptionThis doll portrays Minamoto Yoshitsune (1159–1189) seated on a wooden stool. His face is oval and white, and he makes a stern facial expression. He has large, inset glass eyes, and his facial details are painted. He is dressed in layers of silk garments under a suit of armor, wears a helmet, and holds a sword, a battle fan (gunpai), an arrow quiver, and a bow. The clothes are made of different kinds of brocaded silk fabric. The suit of armor consists of protective panels made of thick gilded paper boards held by silk lacings. The helmet is made of thick gilded paper with an ornament rendering a dragon, the sun, and the moon.
