DescriptionPoint of Departure is a horizontally oriented abstract composition. The varied abstract elements range in size and shape and their relationships do not follow any pattern. Broad semi-rectangular and polygonal strokes in black and a light blue-gray are spaced along the outer edges of the composition, but drift into the central portion in some places. These black and blue-gray elements are mostly adjacent to or layered on top of each other. These broad shapes and strokes appear closer to the viewer than some of the finer strokes and shapes in the center of the composition. Some of those elements are the same black and blue-gray colors found in the outer part of the composition. Others are in turquoise, cream, or lavender, and there are hints of golden yellow. Areas of these colors extend into the left side of the composition. Some of the central black strokes are narrower than those throughout the composition. Underlying the entire composition are shades of gray, more blue-tinted around the outer edges and more brown-tinted toward the middle. There are a few strokes near the top, just left of center, that are a dark, cherry red.Provenance
