DescriptionPrecisely rendered, detailed drawing of a house. A picket fence surrounds the house, while a larger wooden fence encloses the side. A small tree grows on the right, and the sky billows with clouds.Gallery LabelAn inscription on the back of this ink drawing locates its subject in Middlesex, England. Ault rendered the cottage with such care and precision that it might be recognizable were it extant today. Using fine ink lines of varying length and character, he captured the contrasting textures of the roof, windows, brick chimneys and wooden fences. The specificity of the inscription and meticulous details reveal an early documentary impulse that waned as Ault’s art grew increasingly imaginative.
