DescriptionOutdoor scene strewn with classical architectural elements. Arcade in background; fallen column in foreground; plants throughout foreground; pair of clouds in sky Gallery Label
Inspired by the French writer André Breton’s 1924 Manifesto of Surrealism, by the 1930s Ault began creating strangely haunting architectonic landscapes that transcend reality. Echoing the canvases of the Italian Surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico, the carefully drawn Composition combines Ault’s predisposition towards hard edges with a nod to Surrealism’s disquieting juxtapositions, such as the toppled classical column and corn plant in the foreground.
