DescriptionAbstract line drawing including circles (some open and others filled with wavy lines, cross-hatching, and plus sign), a rectangular element at left bisected with diagonal lines and filled with four asterisks; two vaguely square forms darkly shaded containing the suggestion of clouds.Gallery LabelBy the late 1940s Ault’s fascination with pure, nonobjective abstraction was at its height. Lines curve and form sharp angles in this drawing, filling the sheet like a roadmap to some unknown destination. Ault punctuated these meandering pathways with zones embellished with crosshatching, wavy lines, shading and asterisks. While the meaning of these marks remains unknown, the small square near the center of the composition may be Ault’s reference to his many drawings and paintings that feature otherworldly clouds hovering over mysterious landscapes.
