As one of a group of street photographers associated with the New York-based Photo League, Leon Levinstein took up photography in
1948. Employed as an advertising layout artist, Levinstein photographed primarily on weekends and holidays. He took particular interest in the activity of the street—the bodies and gestures of strangers. Levinstein’s work often suggests a tension between intimacy and estrangement. The subject of this photograph, for example, is recorded at close proximity, giving the work a confrontational quality, while the unusual camera angle imparts a psychological distance.
