DescriptionImage of a young boy's face in the center foreground, cropped at the nose. A child in a striped dress runs through a puddle center left and multi-story buildings are in background.Gallery LabelLeon Levinstein immortalized moments of everyday life in brash, off-kilter photographs like this one. According to Levinstein, “Probably the greatest contribution of photography is its ability to teach people to see—making crystal clear what was once intangible. It can create a substance and a quality of reality in our lives.”
Born in West Virginia, Levinstein moved to New York after his discharge from the Army in 1945. There, he studied photography with Sid Grossman at the Photo League. At a time when there were few places to study the medium, the League offered classes and an affordable darkroom, organized exhibitions, and held lectures.
