Gallery Label
During his reign as the leading American advertising, fashion, and portrait photographer of the 1920s and 1930s, Edward Steichen recorded the most celebrated figures of the age. In this iconic work, actress Greta Garbo (1905-1990)-one of the most secretive of stars-engages the viewer with a remote stare. Here, Garbo is at once intimate and inscrutable, unmistakable and yet unknowable.
