DescriptionUsing fine black lines, this horizontally oriented drypoint print depicts two figures in what appears to be an outdoor setting suggested by only a few lines to indicate the exterior of a building, a street, and a leafless tree near the right side of the composition. The figure closest to the picture plane is a man who may be characterized as a beggar. His form occupies most of the left side of the image as he leans against a wall against which his body casts a slight shadow. His garments are only summarily described, while his face is slightly more solidly rendered. He is shown in a seated position, with his up-turned hat held in his proper right hand, both of which rest in his lap. His eyes are wide, eyebrows raised, and mouth agape as he looks to the right and towards the middle ground of the scene at a very slender, well-dressed woman who leans slightly forward while returning his gaze. The woman wears a large hat. The front of her dark hair, styled in an up-do, falls over her proper left eye. She wears a long, sleeveless gown and holds an unidentified stick-like object in her proper right hand.Exhibition History
