After his success as an avant-garde artistic photographer, Edward Steichen turned away from largely private pursuits to use photography as a tool of mass communication. Based in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, he became the world's leading advertising, fashion and portrait photographer. This photograph, one of the first of Steichen's many celebrity portraits to appear in Vanity Fair magazine, depicts his sister Lillian with her husband, the poet Carl Sandburg. This image is slightly unusual for this period in his work for having been made outside the controlled environment of the studio.
