DescriptionThis is a vertically oriented drawing executed in black ink and gray graphite that depicts a young or middle-aged Caucasian woman. She is seated, but the support on which she sits is not depicted. Her body is in three-quarter view with her proper left side closest to the picture plane, but her face is turned further toward her proper left, looking directly at the picture plane. She is wearing an up-do for her hair; a long-sleeved, light-colored blouse with a broad collar that meets at her breast with a tie detail; and an ankle-length black skirt. One black shoe is visible under her skirt at the bottom left of the drawing. Her arms lay on her lap, bent slightly and holding an open book on her knees. There are four small sketches along the right-hand edge of the paper, two in ink at the upper right corner and two in graphite near the middle of the right edge. The uppermost ink sketch depicts a portion of the proper right profile of a man. The sketch just below the uppermost one depicts the proper left profile of a man similar to the man depicted in the first sketch. The upper of the two graphite sketches is unclear but may depict the top of the shoulders and head of a person wearing a Stetson-style hat. The lower graphite sketch depicts the proper right profile of a man who appears to have a moustache. There are also small ink lines and inkblots in the space along the right edge of the drawing between the two pairs of sketches. There is also a circular, black inkblot near the proper right elbow of the woman.Exhibition HistoryFurther research needed.
