In this late work by Clarence White, we see the breadth of White’s artistic ideas. White’s oblique perspective, selective focus, and tight cropping transform this modern subject (the spillway of a large dam north of New York City) into a remarkably abstract image.
Entirely self-taught, Clarence H. White began to photograph in 1893 and achieved international recognition by about 1900. He began a career as an educator after moving to New York City in 1906 and established the Clarence H. White School of Photography there in 1914.
