DescriptionImage of a young child with his outstretched hand touching a clear orb. He's facing a window that is covered with tiny drops of rain.Exhibition HistoryNew Acquisitions to the Hallmark Photographic Collection 1980-1983. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, April 1 - May 1, 1983.
Clarence White was a leading figure in turn-of-the-century Pictorialism, a photographic movement characterized by meticulously printed, soft-focused images. White transformed commonplace domestic scenes into visual poetry. Through his camera lens, the world became a kind of enchanted realm far removed from the complications of modern life.
As an educator and artist, White had an enormous impact on American art photography in the early 1900s. He taught a generation of talented young photographers including Doris Ulmann, Wynn Richards, Margaret Watkins, Bernard S. Horne, and Mortimer Offner.
