Gallery LabelSven Birger Sandzén's ocean scene vibrates with short, brilliantly colored brushstrokes. Between these strokes, the unpainted paper suggests the foaming crash of waves in the foreground and the glint of sunlight off the water in the middle ground.
Sandzén painted in both watercolor and oil, adapting some oil painting techniques for use with watercolor. For example, he used a thick buildup of paint to represent the blue of the ocean washing over the rocks. This technique, known as impasto, is also found in Sandzén's oil painting The Great Peak (Longs Peak).
