The subject of Sandzén's Sunflowers refers symbolically to Kansas, the artist's adopted home state, as well as artistically to Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who famously rendered sunflowers and whom Sandzén himself admired for his vigorous, colorful manner of painting. The lithographic technique successfully conveys the artist's dynamic and confident use of line.
