DescriptionImage of a painting of a hamburger on a wall with cracking paint; the bottom half of the burger is unfinished and blends into the background.Gallery LabelIn this sign, the top third of a hamburger is fully rendered, while its bottom portion remains a ghostly outline. The craquelure (web of fine cracks in painted images) that runs throughout the surface suggests the hamburger was perhaps never fully painted. Dow found the rich textural complexity of this weathered illustration fascinating. For him, it revealed through its many layers the impact of time’s passage on the object itself.
