DescriptionImage of a painting depicting a woman wearing swimsuit standing in the doorway of a trailer looking out towards a man and girl who are playing with a beach ball and also wearing swimsuits.Gallery Label

Many of the figures illustrated on the signs and billboards Dow encountered were white and middle class. They reinforced the nuclear family ideals promoted in much mid-1900s advertising. This family group is shown enjoying their vacation outside a large vehicle with the shiny silver and rounded shape of an Airstream.

The popularity of these trailers surged during the 1950s and 1960s, providing people the ability to travel without sacrificing the conveniences of home. Note that the illustrator painted high heels on the mother figure, suggesting that camping could be a fashionable affair.
