DescriptionA side cabinet with overall ornament in première and contre partie boulle-work, lacquered-brass mounts and brass-inlaid rosewood and ebony. The green and pink Mona marble top sits above a leaf-tip and berry cast-molded edge. Below the marble top is a frieze of a densely delineated and intertwined pattern of vines and flowers in première partie boulle-work. The two sides of the cabinet have doors with a similar floriated design issuing from a large stylized flower in première partie boulle-work, each enclosing a shelf. Flanking each door are two disengaged ringed columns covered in both première and contre partie boulle-work and attached floral and acanthus mounts. A mirrored back connects the two sides, which sit atop bracket feet.Exhibition History

George Bullock: Cabinet Maker 1988, H. Blairman & Sons Ltd, London, England, February 24- March 19, 1988, no. 41.

Provenance

With Claude Bornoff Antiques, London;

Mr. John F. (1916-1983) & Mrs. Helena (1914-1997) Hayward, London, England;

With Mr. Jay Pollock (1915-1999) & Mrs. Nan (née Hirschberg 1922-2016) Altmayer, Palmetto Hall, Mobile, Alabama, probably by 1988 [1];

Purchased at their posthumous sale Palmetto Hall: The Jay P. Altmayer Family Collection Christie’s, New York, January 19, 2017, lot 58 by H. Blairman & Sons Ltd., London;

Purchased from H. Blairman & Sons by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO 2017.

NOTES:

[1] According to Christie’s, it has been suggested that the sideboard may have been purchased privately from Helena Hayward as it is known that the Altmayers were friendly with the Haywards. The piece was certainly in the Altmayer collection by 1988 when it was referenced in the seminal Bullock exhibition held by H. Blairman & Sons.
