DescriptionUsing fine black lines, this horizontally oriented drypoint print features at its right side a woman seated at a table. She is depicted from the waist up, wears a large brimmed hat that casts a shadow across her face, and looks over her proper left shoulder out at the viewer. Both of her elbows rest on the summarily rendered table top as she leans slightly forward. She gestures with her proper right hand—thumb and index finger extended while the other three fingers curl towards her palm. In her proper left hand, she holds a cigarette from which a thin double trail of smoke extends vertically up to top edges of the composition. Her hand and the cigarette are position just above a coffee/tea cup (the handle of which extends towards the left) resting on a saucer. The environment in which the woman sits, in a café, perhaps, and before a window, is very sketchily rendered and suggested only by a few lines in the upper left section of the image. The composition is inscribed with the monogram “AB” just slightly above and to the left of the coffee/tea cup.Exhibition HistoryNone
