Liu Guosong created this abstract landscape by combining traditional Chinese ink painting and collage. First, he brushed dark ink onto the coarse paper. Next, he stripped away some of the paper’s fibers, leaving behind contrasting lines and streaks that suggest jagged boulders. The broad ink brushstrokes become positive space, evoking the mountains on the upper part of the painting. The blank or negative space suggests the vapor of streams and waterfalls.
