DescriptionImage of John F. Kennedy as seen from behind standing at podium with right arm raised; television set broadcasting his speech in foreground.Gallery LabelIn this image, soon-to-be president John F. Kennedy is seen from behind, delivering a speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention. Though his actual face is not visible, his virtual image is seen on a television monitor situated behind him. Garry Winogrand, who was fascinated by the effects of the mass media on public events, chose this vantage point to highlight the disjuncture between reality and representation at a moment in history when television was quickly supplanting still photography as the primary means for receiving news and entertainment. Kennedy, a charismatic political candidate, was known for his telegenic presence, a factor that greatly contributed to the success of his presidential campaign.
