A young woman appears caught off guard as she pedals her bicycle barefoot down a city street. There is a spontaneous feel to this photograph: the woman’s unposed reaction and the picture’s skewed horizon line suggest that the photographer took the picture without carefully composing his subject.

Garry Winogrand often photographed women on the streets of New York City as they engaged in everyday activities. Winogrand published this image as part of a series titled Women Are Beautiful in 1975. Feminists and other critics often denounced Winogrand’s practice as being voyeuristic, because many of the women were unaware their pictures were being taken.
