Taken from the window of her second-floor apartment on 88th Street in New York City’s Upper West Side, Ruth Orkin photographed a solitary man in the rain. Self-taught, Orkin received her first camera at the age of 10 and later made a steady living as a freelance photographer for publications like Life, Look, and Ladies’ Home Journal. In her personal work, Orkin photographed from her New York apartment windows for many decades and featured the pictures in two books, A World Through My Window (1978) and More Pictures from My Window (1983).
