DescriptionImage of two girls, one holding a hula hoop, with a car and bicycle in the background. The girl on the left is wearing a striped dress and stands barefoot with her ams behind her back.Gallery LabelTwo young girls stand in front of a worn pick-up truck parked along a roadside in rural Appalachia. One girl stands barefoot in the dirt in front of the old vehicle, while the other holds a hula hoop and looks matter-of-factly into the camera.
Shelby Lee Adams, who was born in the mountain town of Hazard, Kentucky, has long been fascinated by the people and culture of Appalachia. His portraits depict people in their everyday living environments, and his subjects—whom he considers friends—appear comfortable and confident before his camera.
