DescriptionImage of a large crowd gathered, many holding American flags. Two signs read "IMPEACH THE RED MAYOR". In the foreground, a man extends a microphone out towards the group.Gallery LabelWaving American flags, a group of violent protestors tore through an anti-Vietnam War demonstration in May 1970 in New York City, kicking and beating the non-violent protestors in what came to be known as the “Hard Hat Rally.” In the days that followed, the rally continued, with people carrying signs that read “Impeach the Red [Communist] Mayor” and “God Bless the Establishment.” Here, Garry Winogrand depicts the news media as an integral part of the event: he includes TV reporters and records the rapt attention of the young girl looking toward them at the bottom of the picture.
