DescriptionThe drawing represents a very abstract horse and man standing at the side of the horse. In the upper left, a triangle represents the horse's head. Two circles inscribed within it are "eyes." The tail is at the far right side of the drawing. The stick-like man stands to the left of the horse's tail.Gallery LabelJack Tworkov was a founding member of the Abstract Expressionist New York School. This dynamic, gestural drawing suggesting a figure about to mount a horse engages the viewer’s imagination and evokes unconscious meanings. Untitled (Horse) vacillates between partial figuration and abstraction. With his automatic drawings—created rapidly and spontaneously without interference of the rational mind—Tworkov and others sought a way of tapping into the unconscious and channeling its energies.
