The survey team navigated the Truckee River to Pyramid Lake in the boat named Nettie. On the way, they encountered some treacherous rapids, and the boat became wedged between two boulders. O'Sullivan swam through the rapids with a rope and ultimately pulled the boat to safety. Unfortunately, the rope was weighted with his pocket-book containing his stash of gold pieces. "That was rough," he was reported to have said, "for I never found that 'dust' again."
