At a stop for supplies at an army outpost, the survey party was warned to be on guard for hostile Indians, with the exception of a friendly band of Shoshones led by Captain Buck. As the survey team was scouting out a campsite, Captain Buck and his Shoshones rode screaming out of the hills, tricking the survey party into thinking they were under attack. After a good laugh, O'Sullivan photographed the Shoshones at their camp across the river from the survey party.
