Alfred Stieglitz is a central figure in early 20th-century American photography. After establishing his reputation as a photographic artist in the 1890s, he went on to become a powerfully influential writer, editor, gallery owner and exhibition curator. His loosely organized circle of like-minded artists, the Photo-Secession group, was begun in 1902. Stieglitz extended his vision of modern photography and art in his journal Camera Work (1903-17) and through exhibitions in his New York galleries: 291 (1905-17), The Intimate Gallery (1925-29), and An American Place (1929-37). With intermittent breaks, Stieglitz continued his own artistic work throughout these decades. This portrait of Stieglitz's close associate and patron Dorothy Norman is a deeply personal depiction made from a close, emotionally intimate, vantage point.
