Gallery Label
Stieglitz's portraits of O'Keeffe changed in accordance with their relationship. In 1929, O'Keeffe learned to drive and began summering apart from Stieglitz in New Mexico. From this time on, her life became increasingly independent of her husband's. Not surprisingly, many of Stieglitz's later portraits (such as this) convey a psychological reserve not found in the earlier works. Significantly, O'Keeffe's automobile-a key symbol of both her modernity and her freedom-appears here as a backdrop.
