Typical of Frank’s photographs from The Americans, this image presents its subjects from an unconventional vantage point: most of these men are seen from behind. Wearing nearly identical dark hats and coats, the group at the left meld into a singular entity, while one man in a gray suit, and a young boy wearing a yarmulke, are set apart from the crowd at the image’s right. Here, Frank highlights the tensions between religious expression and individuality, age and youth.
