DescriptionThis small vertically oriented monochromatic print depicts five clowns against a geometric background evocative of a circus ring. The clown to the right of center faces the viewer and wears a dark top hat, a polka-dotted costume, and large dark shoes. The clown to the left of center is shown in profile and faces to the right. He wears a pointed hat, has an exaggerated round nose, a light ruffled collar, and three balls attached to his sleeve. Behind that clown, near the upper left, is a third clown who looks out at the viewer while gesturing with one gloved hand to the left edge of the composition. This clown wears a light-colored costume patterned with large diamonds and a triangular hat. Near the center of the top of the print, a fourth clown with a slim top hat, collar, bow tie, and large round nose looks out towards the viewer while extending both hands to the side. Near the right edge of the composition is a fifth clown in profile looking towards the left and smoking. He wears a slouched hat sprouting a flower, has a large nose, wears an epaulette on his visible shoulder, and has three pompons on his costume.ProvenanceAlbert Bloch to wife, Anna Francis Bloch, Lawrence, Kansas, at his death in 1961;
