DescriptionFreilicher, "Corner of Studio"Depiction of a landscape seen as if the viewer is positioned in an interior space, looking outdoors through three vertical windows. The landscape consists of fields in the foreground and houses located along the horizon line. Indoors, to the left of the windows, hangs a panel of drapery and the cropped edge of a painting that sits on the floor, leaning against a wall.Gallery Label
Jane Freilicher's Corner of Studio depicts a traditional subject, the artist's studio. The vista is familiar: the Long Island landscape, seen from the windows of her studio. She provides just enough information to identify the interior space. At the far left, a drawing or unfinished painting is attached to the wall. Below it, part of a painted landscape is visible leaning against the wall. Both scenes-the landscape in the painting-within-the-painting and the landscape viewed through the set of windows-share the same sense of flatness, or lack of implied distance. These qualities cause the space in the painting to suddenly collapse. The roofs of the distant horizon rush forward, aided by a sweeping diagonal that moves through the topography of the field.
