Edward Hopper’s annual summer travels provided him opportunities to paint extensively in watercolor. In The Dory he painted an abstracted scene with bold, simplified forms. A sailor rows near the rocky coastline of Two Lights, Maine, a small Coast Guard community. This solitary figure was an unusual inclusion for Hopper. His 1920s watercolors more often allowed houses, boats and automobiles to stand in for people in his scenes. Turned away from the viewer, this figure maintains his distance and an aura of isolation.
