DescriptionSilver coffee pot with a tapering body decorated with engraving around the rim and a coat-of-arms (John Bourke, 1st Earl of Mayo) on one side. The curved spout is octagonal in its lower half and decorated with flat chasing; the upper half is tubular with a blunt end and applied leaf. The lid is engraved as well, and is topped by a finial. The scroll handle is wood.Gallery LabelAlthough most examples in the Folgers Collection are English, there are several pieces that illustrate both the skill of Irish silversmiths as well as the strong influence of London design motifs on British-made wares. The engraving features strapwork panels, a type of ornamental pattern consisting of interlacing bands or straps often combined with foliage, in the manner of London silversmiths. The pot bears the arms of John Bourke, the 1st Earl of Mayo of Kildare, whose Irish ancestors date back to 1177.
