DescriptionSilver coffee pot, pear shaped in design, with rings of miniature beading on the foot, on the slightly domed cover below the acorn finial, and at the union of the spout and body. Chasing on the cover and around the handle sockets; scroll-shaped spout. Double-scroll wood handle.Gallery LabelAlthough most works in this collection are from London, regional silversmiths from cities such as Newcastle produced stylish wares as well. This coffee pot exhibits two silver decorating techniques: engraving and chasing. The coat of arms was engraved, a process by which the silver surface is incised with a sharply pointed tool, thus removing metal. Often silversmiths worked with engravers who specialized in this skill. The shell border on the lid is chased, a process by which the silver is raised into the design with tools without removing any metal.
