DescriptionSilver coffee pot with a tapered body that is plain except for engraving on the spout and lid. The spout is octagonal on the lower half, with 3 sections ornamented with engraving. The upper half of the spout is tubular and comes to a blunt end. An applied leaf covers the upper surface of the spout. The spout is positioned at 90 degrees from the octagonal wood handle. The hinged cover has a low dome around which an engraved band surrounds a turned vase finial. Both front and base are engraved with the intials GCB.Gallery Label
The subtle yet elegant chased designs of foliage, shells and trelliswork ornamenting this coffee pot indicate the sophisticated and refined craftsmanship of Paul de Lamerie's workshop, the largest in London.  The pot is made from Britannia silver, a higher grade of silver required from 1697-1720.  Sterling silver is 925 to 1,000 parts pure silver, while Britannia is 958.4.  Lamerie's insistence on using the more costly standard of silver for 12 years after it was obligatory provided a higher grade and thus a more malleable silver for his intricate designs, such as those on the handle and spout.
